Why keep doing what everyone else is doing if it isn’t working for you?

Have you ever heard something like this?

"I spent six months job hunting. I customized my resumes and cover letters, followed every instruction perfectly, applied everywhere, and even completed over thirty online tests—and still didn’t get a single interview. My experience is a perfect fit for at least twenty of the jobs I applied for, and a good match for another sixty. Clearly, the recruiting process is broken."

Artificial intelligence has quickly shifted from being a distant concept to a daily reality. In today’s fiercely competitive job market, experience and qualifications alone are no longer enough to guarantee success. With highly skilled candidates applying for the same roles, the key to standing out lies in how effectively you can communicate your value. Employers are not just looking for someone who meets the job description—they want someone who will drive results, fit into the company culture, and help move the business forward. This is where your Career Value Proposition (CVP) becomes your most powerful tool.

How to get the career you really want

If you're looking for more than just a “job,” you're going to have to stand out from the crowd.
With over 27 years experience helping professionals to progress in their careers, I am comfortable in saying that career-driven individuals don’t just want a paycheque — they want to be challenged with meaningful work, opportunities for personal and professional growth, fair compensation, upward mobility, and balance between their work and personal lives. Since we spend a significant portion of our lives at work, it's natural to want to enjoy what we do and who we do it with. And perhaps most importantly, our relationship with our direct manager often plays a crucial role in whether we get what we want from our career.

Understanding complexity in work

Why Matching Roles With People’s Ability Really Matters

Picture a typical organizational chart — like a pyramid, with entry-level employees at the base and executives at the top. Now think about the kind of work each level does. The tasks at the bottom are usually more structured and focused on immediate results, while those at the top tend to be broader, more strategic, and way more complex.

As you move up that hierarchy, the job responsibilities become less about ticking off to-do lists and more about solving big-picture problems, anticipating future challenges, and guiding the entire organization forward. That shift in responsibility requires something we call complexity management — or in plain terms, the ability to handle, process, and respond to complicated, often long-term issues.

Why Change Is the Key

Your ability to perform—and ultimately thrive—depends on how well you understand and embrace change.

If you have the right education, technical skills, and experience for your role, you can meet expectations. Add strong soft skills that align with your team, manager, and company culture, and you’ll likely exceed them. But to truly reach your full potential, you must also adapt to and manage change effectively.

We live in a fast-paced, ever-changing world. Success in this environment requires agility. Whether at the individual, team, or organizational level, evolving thinking and adapting outdated practices is crucial. Embracing change opens the door to opportunity and prevents stagnation.

why some people get the career they want

I am remembering some of the people that we helped with their career development. Most of them were employed in attractive positions, where they were looking to either increase their mobility within their current organization or else to compete for external employment opportunities. Some of them were interested in enhancing their performance skills in order to be more effective and to gain more recognition in their current role. And a few others were unemployed, due to the economic circumstances but, rather than just trying to find a ‘job’, they remained interested in obtaining a real career opportunity as the next logical step in their career progression.

CAES Candidate assessment and selection

If you are not effectively assessing a candidate’s ability to perform you increase the likelihood that undesirable performance will occur.

In this article, the focus is on our Assessment and Selection service. I need to stress that, whether you are interested in CAES’s approach or not, you should still consider evaluating the effectiveness of your current external and internal candidate assessment process. Too often managers hire, or promote, the wrong people for the wrong reasons, and thus they are disappointed with the poor performance that follows.

Work Personality is A Performance Key

1/16/2026

Just imagine what you could accomplish if you created a corporate culture based on superior performance and sustained by an embedded continuous improvement mentality. A culture where everyone involved would congruently strive for superior performance on a personal level, a managerial level, a team level and an organization-wide level. Where the “status quo” is a bench mark to be left behind and only utilized as a starting point from which future performance will be measured. It can be done.

The Real secret to performance success

Those of you who know me have often heard me say that people who are successful, and who have great careers, accomplish this because they actually perform in their current positions and they can show the potential to perform at their next career level. It’s all about performance. And my consistent message is, “for superior performance to be achieved, and sustained over time, there needs to be a balanced match between an individual’s technical capabilities (education, technical skills and experience) and their non-technical (‘soft’) skills, to their specific work, manager, team and overall organizational culture”.
